10-23-2013 Multiplying Decimals

Take out your planner:  Homework - finish your Multiplying Decimals packet.  Due tomorrow.

Reworks:  I will no longer grade your Reworks unless you have a "mentor" sign each problem.

I am spending way to much time grading Reworks that are INCORRECT!  You should not have to REDO your Reworks!

You need to find someone who got the answer correct and find out how to do the problem correctly.  DO NOT JUST DO IT BY YOURSELF.

Mentors: if you sign a problem on the Rework and it is wrong, you are just as responsible!

Judo Math

  1. Rework is due today.  Make sure you have a Mentor check your work on sign it.  Please turn it in by the end of the period.
  2. You are to watch one Video to support your Scroll work.
  3. You are to work on your Scroll.  You must have at least one page done today.  Show me your page when you are done for a STAMP.  Be sure to check your answers.

10-21-2013 Monday Rework!

Get out your planner:  Homework - turn in both Blocks Tasks by Tuesday.
NOTE:  MAKE SURE YOU USE THE NUMBERS 3, 4, 5 for your task NOT 3, 3, 5!

Homework Due Tuesday:  Decimal packet.

Progress Tracker!

New list of students for Fahy.

Reworks.  If you REDO a REWORK, you MUST use a NEW Rework sheet or I will NOT GRADE IT.  Thank you for your support.  :)

Also, IF YOU DO NOT PUT THE DATE ON YOUR ADVANCEMENT OR REWORKS, I WILL TAKE AN ENTIRE POINT OFF.  That could cost you your belt for the week.  :(

Forgot to vote for mentors!  Let's do this!

Speaking of mentors...

How to coach:
  • Do not tell, give hints.
  • Ask questions.  "Why did you put the decimal there."
  • Look for understanding of concepts, not just getting the correct answer.

Move to mentor seats.  You can sit on the floor if you like.

10-17-2013 Why are these incorrect and incomplete?

Today we will continue our investigation of the Blocks Task.

Yesterday we looked at responses that were Correct and Complete.

Today we will look at other responses that, to some degree, are INCORRECT and/or INCOMPLETE. YOUR TASK is to evaluate these responses with the rubric and edit them to make them correct and complete.  Click here for the assignment.

  • You will edit three responses to make them correct and complete.  (15 minutes)
  • You will make comments for the other responses in the Is It Complete and Correct? worksheet.  (10 minutes)

Why do this?  In order to become good at Performance Tasks, we need to focus on what makes a Performance Task CORRECT and COMPLETE.  The best way to do that is to look at responses that are INCORRECT and/or INCOMPLETE.  Analyzing the work of others can help us improve our own work.

In your planner:  Homework due Friday - edit your own Blocks Task to make sure it is correct and complete.

Work on your Scrolls or Reworks for the rest of the period.  Be sure to FIND SOMEONE WHO KNOWS how to do the problems you got wrong on your Rework and show them COACH you.

Remember, Coaches don't tell, they give hints.

10-16-2013 Blocks Task Continued

Today we will continue our Performance Task called the Blocks Task.

Yesterday we did the Blocks Task.

Today will identify some of the strategies used to solve this task.

Then we will use a rubric to look at examples of CORRECT and COMPLETE responses.

THINK:  What were some of the components of responses that were scored at the highest level?  What did we see yesterday?

10-15-2013 Blocks Task!

Get computers.

Today we are going to do a Performance Task called the Blocks Task.

Why do this?  We want to develop our skills as "Problem Solvers."  Solving one problem in many ways can be more beneficial in becoming a "Problem Solver" than solving many problems, each in one way.

We will be looking for the different ways the task or problem can be solved.  Most math problems can be solved in different ways.

Solving complex problems is a Workforce Skill that employers are looking for in employees.

Another important strategy in becoming a good problem solver is reflecting on one's strategies and thinking to learn from the experience.

We will reflect on our strategies by talking about them and writing about them.

Today's task:
1.  PARTNERS:  Do a Three Reads.  (5 minutes)
Partner A and B.  Silently read straight through.
Partner A.  Find the numbers and make sense of them.  What do the numbers represent?  CIRCLE
Partner B.  What is the problem we need to solve?  Identify it.  What questions do we have about the problem. BOX

Finished SIGNAL: Turn your Blocks Task paper upside down.

2.  SOLO:  Do the Blocks Task by yourself.  USE PEN!  (5 minutes)
If you need blocks to use, there on some on the table.  Tools not Toys!

Finished SIGNAL: Turn your Blocks Task paper upside down.

3.  CLASS DISCUSSION:  Students share their strategies.  (15 minutes)
Look over Discussion Norms.  Click here.

4.  CLASS:  Look over the Blocks Task rubric (one per pair).  (5 minutes)
(Do not write on these.  Please give them back when you are finished.)

5.  SOLO:  Look over the Blocks Tasks examples that are a 4. Click here.  Why do you think they are a 4?  Write your ideas about the strategies used in the worksheet called Is It Complete and/or Correct?  (10 minutes)

6.  TEAM DISCUSSION:  Compare your ideas about the examples with your team.  (4 minutes)

One minute each team member.  That means you talk for the ENTIRE MINUTE.

7.  CLASS DISCUSSION:  Compare your ideas - share out.  (5 minutes)

10-7-2013 Rework!

Chairs for Mentors today!
Morning Core Mentors:  Jaycee, Jenna B, Lily, Liliana!
Afternoon Core Mentors: Tyler B, Christelle, Zac, Carson!

Some people wrote that no one helped them.  This means you are not doing your rework correctly! You are not to do your Rework alone.  You didn't know how to do it the first time.  You need to FIND SOMEONE WHO DID IT CORRECTLY and ask them to explain it to you!  Many of you are doing your Reworks INCORRECTLY!  This is a waste of your time and mine because I have to grade them twice!

Missing Reworks for this week (not counting past weeks):
Morning Core: Shelley, Tosh, Jenna B, Sam, Joseph, Carlos, Ozzy, Jaycee, Santi, Corey, Eduardo, Lily, Tyler, Harvey!
Afternoon Core:  Justin, Christopher, Josh, Chris, Theo, Christian, Race, Herson, Richie!

Check your progress in Power School!

Reworks today.  Put the date due (Thursday 10-10) and the Assessment Letter (A, B, C) on your Rework.

Find someone who knows how to do the problem correctly!  Reworks are due on Thursday.  Please turn in early if you finish.  That way I can grade it and get it back quick so you can study for next Advancement.

Let's focus on Explanations today.

For your Explanation, I am looking for you to explain the math rule that you are using.  For example, some people say "I put the decimal in the wrong place."

That is not a good Explanation.

A good explanation would be:  I put the decimal in the wrong place because problem was $9.75 times 32 hours and I know that 10 x 32 is $320.  I realize now that I should have estimated first.  Then I would have known that 32 x 9.75 is $312 not 31.2.

Another example would be -23 is more than -27 because it is closer to zero on a number line.

This is not a good example of an explantation and not a good rule.  Why is this not a good rule?

Planner
Homework:  you should be doing 1-2 pages each day in your Scroll!

Reworks due Thursday.

Don't forget your paper The Fundraiser Thermometer.  (purple paper)  Due tomorrow.

10-2-2013 Scroll Work Today

Fraction Warm Up!

Take out your Performance Task The Fund Raiser Thermometer.

My question to you last night was how much money do the students still need to raise?

Do not throw away this paper, we will be working on it again tomorrow.

Today in Judo Math, make sure you turn in your rework today.

Then work on your Scroll.  You should be completing 2 pages of your Scroll everyday.  If you do not finish 2 pages during class, you need to work on your Scroll at home.

10-1-2013 Fund Raising Thermometer

Library book missing.  Have you seen it?   Diary of a Wimpy Kid Rodrick Rules.

Today we will do our first Performance Task.

The big deal with Perfornance Tasks is figuring out what the challenge is.

First we will do something called 3 Reads.  Has anyone done a 3 Reads before?

1.  Read straight through for content.
2.  Read numbers and look for their relationships.  Discuss.
3.  Summarize - what could the problem be?

What do we know about fund raisers?

How can we track the progress in a fund raiser?

How can a thermometer be used to track our progress to the goal?

How did we measure the shared portion of the thermometer?

How can we figure out a fraction for the shared part?

Are the students ahead or behind schedule?  How do we know?

Which day do you think they will reach their goal?  What is your evidence?

What do we know about rates?
